Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in Costa Rica!
It’s that time of year again! Mother’s Day in Costa Rica falls every year on the same date, August 15th.
Why August 15th?
Why does Costa Rica celebrate Mother’s Day on August 15th? Well, August 15th falls on the same day as the Assumption of Mary where she was received into heaven at the end of her life. That may have something to do with it.
The beauty of Mother’s Day in Costa Rica is that it’s a national holiday. That’s right! Mother’s Day is so important that many people get the day off.
And I think that’s awesome.
Also celebrating Mother’s Day on August 15th is Antwerp, Belgium. Not the rest of Belgium, just Antwerp. You know, the Diamond Capital of the World. So, Happy Mother’s Day to Antwerpians, too.
Mother’s Day in Other Countries
In the United States, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May, as do a boatload of other countries.
Many places celebrate Mother’s Day at various times of the year, some in October and some even in November and December. Argentina, for example, celebrates Mother’s Day on the third Sunday in October.
Costa Rica’s neighbors celebrate differently as well. Nicaragua celebrates Mother’s Day on May 30th, and Panama doesn’t celebrate until December 8th! Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala all honor moms on May 10th. Honduras and Belize celebrate the second Sunday in May.
Mother’s Day in Costa Rica
So how is Mother’s Day celebrated in Costa Rica?
Mother’s Day has become a lot more commercial in the past few years with social media bombarding people with gift ideas weeks in advance of the holiday. Pretty similar to the States.
People celebrate in a wide variety of ways, just like anywhere else. That can include flowers, gifts, dinner out or just time spent together. Each family has their own way of celebrating.
So, if you know any Costa Rican moms, wish them a Happy Mother’s Day today, August 15th!
Nice post! Hope you were there to celebrate!
Thanks, Pamela. I wasn’t there this year, but I think it’s cool that the holiday is so important that a lot of people get the day off!
