If you grew up in the 70s like I did, maybe you remember the commercials on TV about astronauts drinking Tang in space. Imagine that? We could drink the same thing that astronauts were drinking! So cool for us kids.
Back then, Tang came in two flavors: the classic Tang orange and grape.
Now, you can only find Tang in orange. I had kind of forgotten about it until I saw Tang in Costa Rican grocery stores, and all I can say is that Tang is alive and well and is available in a multitude of flavors!
How come we don’t have these awesome flavors??
Tang Drink Mix in Costa Rica
Orange is just one of many flavors that Tang comes in in Costa Rica.
As you can see, Tang comes in grape, apple, lemon-lime flavor, maracuya (passion fruit), guava-pineapple mix, and a few flavors that can even be made with milk instead of water!—guanabana (soursop), melon (cantaloupe) and horchata. Plus, there are more flavors like blackberry and tamarind that aren’t pictured here.
And it doesn’t stop there! There’s an entire line of Tang iced tea flavors as well.
I am absolutely fascinated by these Tang flavors and always stock up when I’m in Costa Rica.
Each envelope of Tang makes either one or two liters. The sugar-sweetened package makes one liter, and the sugar-free makes 2 liters. The sugar-free variety doesn’t say “sugar-free” on the package, but it does have a calorie counter on the front that says 10 calories. I didn’t realize they were sugar-free until after I had purchased them, but for me, that’s a plus.
You can find Tang drink mixes in almost any Costa Rican supermarket, right from Mas X Menos to Pali, Auto Mercado and of course, Walmart.
Come On, Tang!
Hey, Tang makers, if you’re reading this, how about a few of these flavors for the States? I realize there might not be a huge market for soursop, but how about some of the other flavors?
I know I’d love to see these Tang flavors hit the markets here in New York!
I do remember Tang! Would love to try some of those new flavors. Pack some in your suitcase next time for me please. 😉
Funny thing happened the day after I posted this. I was in the Walmart store in Amsterdam, NY and found a drink mix with the brand name of “Klass”. And guess what? They’ve got soursop, passion fruit, horchata and even hibiscus (what they call Jamaica in Costa Rica). I’d never heard of the brand but I’ll have to give it a try. As a side note, if anyone gets a chance of try these drinks made straight from the fruit (like in Cartago’s Municipal Market!) do so! Costa Rica has the most amazing selection of natural fruit drinks you could imagine, even though I still find the Tang interesting and nostalgic.
Hey I’m all out of the tang mix I got in Costa Rica. Do you know where I can find my beloved drink in the states? It’ll be quite some time before my next trip back!
Hey there, yeah it might be awhile before anyone travels to Costa Rica and I wouldn’t be surprised if they delay the border openings even longer. I do know that Amazon carries a few flavors like uva, maracuya and limon. I’m not sure what country they’re made in. I’ve also seen in Walmart (and Walmart online) a brand of drinks called “Klass” and they have flavors like jamaica (hibiscus), horchata and guayaba. I’ve never tried them so I can’t say how they are. Hope you find a flavor you like!
I would love to be able to get some Limon tang it’s the best for margarita …..last time in Costa Rica I bought 30 package and I don’t have anymore ….I can’t find anything that taste as good in my drinks ….pls help or I need to go back to Costa Rica 🇨🇷 😂
Hi Celine, you can order limon Tang from Amazon (I’ve inserted an affiliate link in the article). However, I think maybe it would be even more fun if you went back to Costa Rica! I just returned with about ten packages of Tang in grape, limon and guava flavors! Thanks for reading!
